What the heck is a ‘screwball spelling bee fundraiser,’ you ask? It is where adults form teams prior to the competition, raise as much money in pledges as they can, and then compete in a spelling bee tournament where the “judges” are improv comedy actors and the competitors are treated like 7th graders. The spelling bee turns into a hilarious show where the teams attempt to beat their competition by using “cheats,” which are bought through their pledges raised prior to the competition. The winning team gets a trophy and the admiration of everyone in Silver Lake (or at least Micheltorena)! The hosts of our spelling bee fundraiser are Jay Reiss and Rebecca Feldman, the creators of the Tony award-winning broadway play, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.” Jay, who played the judge in the original Broadway cast, will be our judge for the event!
